چکیده

Volume currents are important for the accurate calculation of magnetoencephalographic (MEG) forward or inverse simulations in realistic head models. We verify the accuracy of the finite element method in MEG simulations by comparing its results for spheres containing dipoles to those obtained from the analytic solution. We then use the finite element method to show that, in an inhomogeneous, non-spherical realistic head model, the magnetic field normal to the MEG detector due to volume currents often has a magnitude on the same order or greater than the magnitude of the normal component of the primary magnetic field from the dipole. We also demonstrate the disparity in forward solutions between a model which employs spheres, one which uses the realistic head and primary currents alone, and a realistic head model, which incorporates both primary and volume currents. In forward and inverse MEG simulations using the realistic model, the results obtained from calculations containing volume currents are more accurate than those derived without considering volume currents.

Can a Spherical Model Substitute for a Realistic Head Model in Forward and Inverse MEG Simulations?

Although the human head is not a sphere, models using spheres have been employed to simplify forward and inverse magnetoencephalographic (MEG) calculations. We compared the normal component of the magnetic field calculated at 61 detectors and the localization accuracy of 5 different spherical models to the results obtained using the finite element method (FEM) in a realistic head model. The sph...

Generalized head models for MEG/EEG: boundary element method beyond nested volumes.

Accurate geometrical models of the head are necessary for solving the forward and inverse problems of magneto- and electro-encephalography (MEG/EEG). Boundary element methods (BEMs) require a geometrical model describing the interfaces between different tissue types. Classically, head models with a nested volume topology have been used. In this paper, we demonstrate how this constraint can be r...

Monte Carlo simulation studies of EEG and MEG localization accuracy.

Both electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) are currently used to localize brain activity. The accuracy of source localization depends on numerous factors, including the specific inverse approach and source model, fundamental differences in EEG and MEG data, and the accuracy of the volume conductor model of the head (i.e., the forward model). Using Monte Carlo simulations...

Validation and Application of Realistic Head Modelling to MEG.

While realistic head modelling is nowadays frequently applied in EEG source analysis, it is only rarely used in the evaluation of MEG measurements. One reason is the lower dependency of MEG signals on the volume conductor geometry. However, a simultaneous evaluation of EEG and MEG is highly desirable for an accurate source reconstruction when considering the complementary strengths of these two...

A study of dipole localization accuracy for MEG and EEG using a human skull phantom.

OBJECTIVE To investigate the accuracy of forward and inverse techniques for EEG and MEG dipole localization. DESIGN AND METHODS A human skull phantom was constructed with brain, skull and scalp layers and realistic relative conductivities. Thirty two independent current dipoles were distributed within the 'brain' region and EEG and MEG data collected separately for each dipole. The true dipol...
